Brig. Gen. (MDDF) Lorenza Cooper began his military career in February 1979, as an enlisted finance clerk in the North Carolina Army National Guard. In 1980, he enrolled in the Army ROTC program at North Carolina Central University, receiving his commission as a second lieutenant through the Army’s Early Commissioning Program in May 1982.
Cooper’s first commissioned officer assignment was as a finance corps officer with Co. A, 230th Support Battalion, North Carolina Army National Guard. Cooper transferred to the Texas Army National Guard in October 1985 and was assigned to the 49th Finance Company in Austin, Texas. In May 1987, he transferred to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 169th Field Artillery Brigade in the Colorado Army National Guard.
He then came to the Maryland Army National Guard in September 1988, initially assigned to the 329th AG Company (Postal). His assignments in Maryland have included supply management officer, transportation officer, and maintenance officer in the 297th Maintenance Battalion. He commanded Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Maintenance Battalion, and then the 1297th Corps Support Battalion where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has served at the state headquarters level as the MDARNG G4 subsistence officer and as the MDARNG G4 supply management officer. His last assignment prior to taking command of the 58th Troop Command was on the Maryland National Guard Joint Staff as Maryland’s J4 (Joint Logistics Officer). Cooper has served as Commander, 58th Troop Command from 2008 – 2011, where he has overseen numerous state active duty missions in response to snowstorms, hurricanes, and post 9/11 operations.
Cooper is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff Course, the Combined Arms & Services Staff Course, the Multi-Functional Combat Service Support Course, the Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, and the Finance Officer Basic and Advanced Courses. He holds a Bachelors of Business Administration degree from North Carolina Central University. He is president & CEO of Cooper Risk Management, Inc. (CRM) a private independent property and casualty insurance agency.
Cooper was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to the late Willie and Pattie Cooper. He resides in Cooksville, Maryland, with his wife Lisa Warnick-Cooper and daughters, Ashley and Jasmine.
