State Tuition Waiver (STW)

State Tuition Waiver (STW) letters are issued centrally via email. STW is up to 50% tuition waived at one the Maryland partner schools. To receive a waiver, you may inquire via the app, email, or call the education office. The mobile app is only available to National Guard personnel with at least two years remaining. Education Office personnel will check that you are in good standing. STW letter is for use at one of the state partner institutions. State Tuition Assistance Reimbursement (STAR)
State Tuition Assistance Reimbursement (STAR) reimburses MDNG Service Members (SM) $8500.00 per fiscal year. MDNG SMs must have at least 2 years remaining in their contract and be in good standing to use the benefit for all education programs to include certificates, associates, bachelors, graduate, and doctoral programs at one of the state partner schools at the provided link: https://military.maryland.gov/NG/Pages/Partner-Schools.aspx

Applications must be emailed within 45 days of course start date. At the end of each semester SMs submit the following within 45 days of course end date:
1.          Official/unofficial transcripts with passing grades
2.          Final itemized bill, after all other benefits are applied and $0.00 balance
3.          Final STAR application reflecting any within term changes.
 
SMs may inquire by using the app, but all applications are sent via to an MDNG education office employee at MDNGSTAR@army.mil, MDNGEDUCATION@army.mil or call us at 667-296-4132. 


Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA)

Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) is a benefit available for all uniformed service members and may be combined with the State Tuition Assistance (STA) programs. This program is governed by Army IgnitED. The Education Office can assist Soldiers in FTA account setup applications.

Qualification:
MDNG and other components
Issued a CAC Card
May use with any GI Bill and STA
No Flags

Benefit:
Up to $250 Per Credit Hour 
Total of $4000 per fiscal year
130 credit cap for Bachelor’s or undergraduate coursework
39 semester hours for one Master’s or graduate coursework
Capped at 16 hours per fiscal year
Must have minimum 2.0 GPA for Bachelors, and 3.0 GPA for Masters
Funding recouped for poor grades
Soldiers apply 60- 8 days before classes start Tuition only

Step 1. Go to https://www.armyignited.army.mil/student (be sure to use entire address, including https), locate the "Get Started" and create your lognin.gov account (sign-in with CAC card to create account); and confirm all your contact information.

Step 2. Once the student account is established, click on "Education Goal" and select the school, degree level, and type of degree (area of study/major) you want to pursue. 
Step 3. Once your education goal has been approved by your ESO/ESS and your school certifying official, enroll in the course(s) you want to take with your school (your school will electronically send your enrollment files through ArmyIgnitED).

Step 4. Go back to ArmyIgnitED and click on the "Request Tuition Assistance" button to select the course(s) you want to take and click on "Submit Request". You will receive an email stating the status of your tuition assistance request (TAR).

TA cannot be used for first- professional degrees, e.g., PhD, MD or JD. In addition to DA adverse action flags, we will continue our policy to not allow TA for Soldiers who are flagged for ACFT or HT/WT. However, no further TA-funded enrollments will be authorized until they meet the new eligibility requirements.
